Can AI Replace Coaches?
There's a growing conversation about artificial intelligence replacing jobs, including coaching and consulting roles. And there is no question that AI is becoming increasingly capable. AI can help structure thinking, offer new perspectives, identify patterns, and create action plans faster, and often at a lower cost, than many services currently described as coaching. That can be useful.
But useful is not the same as human development.
People rarely struggle because they lack information. In many cases, they already know what they need to do. The challenge is doing it consistently, especially when pressure, uncertainty, fear, or old habits get in the way. That is where coaching becomes something more than a conversation about goals and action plans.
A skilled coach is not simply processing words or asking prepared questions. Coaching is a human relationship built on presence, trust, observation, and meaningful connection. A coach may notice hesitation, withdrawal, defensiveness, or the moment confidence becomes a protective shield.
And sometimes, what is not being said matters as much as what is. AI can challenge our thinking. It can help us explore ideas and generate possibilities. It can be an effective thinking partner. But optimized thinking is not the same as human transformation.
The value of coaching is not simply in asking a clever question. It is in creating a relationship that challenges, supports, and helps a person develop the capacity to become who they need to be. Accountability from a person sitting across from you is a lot different from a reminder on your app to go to the gym today.
Use AI as a tool. Use it as a thinking partner.
But don't confuse access to information, perspectives, and optimized responses with the deeper work of human development. Perhaps the better question is not: "Can AI replace coaching?" Perhaps it is: "Did we ever truly understand what coaching was?"
