“ARE WE THERE YET?”
Have you ever taken a road trip with a young child? You’ve probably heard the question: "Are we there yet?"
Interestingly, this question isn’t just for kids; I hear it from leaders and clients often: "Am I a better leader yet?" or "Why aren’t we seeing results yet?"
Growth and meaningful change resemble a journey to a destination. We know where we want to go and can envision success, yet growth rarely follows our preferred timeline. Essential skills like self-awareness and communication develop gradually, through conversations, decisions, and experiences.
Consider effective leaders; they didn’t acquire their skills overnight. Their growth came from years of learning, adapting, making mistakes, and receiving feedback. This journey often leads to discouragement; we focus so much on the destination that we overlook our progress along the way. For example, a leader improving their listening may not be a top communicator yet, but they are getting better. Progress can sometimes only be seen in hindsight.
As leaders, we need to recognize that growth is about becoming the kind of person who can sustain success, not just reaching a goal. The journey holds value in its lessons, challenges, and reflections.
Instead of asking, "Are we there yet?", try asking, "What am I learning on this journey?" The destination is important, but who you become along the way matters even more.
Leadership Challenge for Next Week: Focus on one leadership skill you wish to develop. Each day, practice one act or step toward developing this skill. Celebrate your progress while committing to the journey.
Have a great weekend. Lead well.
